I decided that I would give it another go and it seems to just work….. and running on Windows 7 as well.

See for yourself…..

So if Sun can do this and give it a way for free, why can’t Microsoft enable Windows Virtual PC to have 64bit support?

Here in the UK we had a bank holiday yesterday which of course meant we had 3 days off. So I spent some time with the wife over the last few days and decided that I would embark on new project.

Last week I was looking at the plug-ins for Windows Home Server. I came across one which sync your pictures to flickr. Unfortunately it didn’t work that well, it only uploaded the images within the root of the folder you gave to it.

I looked the forums and there seem to be a lot of people requiring this plug in, but the one available was buggy and the developer hadn’t blogged since last year.

So I decided that I would throw something to gather. After around 8 hours approx. I have my application talking to flickr, uploading.

The next big milestone will figuring out how to write an Windows Home Server Addin. So while 60-70% of the application is pretty much done and working, it won’t work with WHS as intended, so time permitting I’m hoping to a full BETA version ready to go in about two weeks.

This will allow 3 PC’s to be upgraded in the home. This is good news, however the bad news, is that’s it’s only going to be on sale for a limited period, this should be on sale full stop.

Windows Team Blog

Update: PC Pro have pricing.

I’ would like to be writing about Windows SBS 2008… but I’m having a hard time getting things up and running.

SBS 2008 is a 64bit OS, because Windows Server 2008 is a 64 bit OS, nothing really surprising about this.

So how do we test new software these days, we tend to use virtual machines.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Server 2005 SP1 don’t support x64 installs! They will run on 64 bit OS, such as Vista 64bit, but the CPU is only a virtual 32 bit….. come on Microsoft please fix this!

So I downloaded a trial of VMWare Workstation, it installed OK, no problem…. until I installed SBS 2008 RC0, it requires a min off 2gb ram to install… my system had 3gb… so I ordered 4 x 2gb sticks… £25 each so my PC now has 8GB Ram, great.

Apart from I don’t want to have to keep using trails to play around with SBS 2008 RC0, I just want to be able to play around when I have time too.

So posted on Channel9 and 9er, Hodo, replied saying I could download VMWare server for free!!

Great, downloaded it this evening and it’s hell….

Problem number 1, had to restart Vista to disable drive signing before VM Server worked….

Problem number 2, VMWare server doesn’t support the use for VMWare’s HDD image it’s to new how annoying, now have to reinstall again.

Problem number 3, after settling for reinstalling, VMWare hung…….

Can’t help feeling that MS and VMWare are “behind” with all this, it shouldn’t be this hard.

I’ve not tried this I assume I could install Windows Server 2008 and with the help of HyperV, get SBS2008 up and running using MS Virtual technologies.

Update: I downloaded and installed VMWare Player which is free and allows me to boot the original Workstation VM that I created.

So I’m happy that I can now evaluate, which out the Workstation timing out….

I really do hope MS fixes this is with Virtual PC…….

I passed my first Microsoft Exam, on Friday. I’ve been working with computers since I was 13+ (I’m 30 now). As I worked in a single company for 9+ years, applying for a Microsoft exam never seem to happen. I think it was a combination of me not wanting to fail and the company I worked for not pushing me and others hard enough, no encouragement, no offers of paying for training courses or books.

The other underlying fact, which I still believe is the case today, is there are allot of people out there who can study then sit and exam pass and think they can do the job, I know this not to be the case. I really would like Microsoft to have some exams where you had to prove that you have been working in the IT world of at least 2 years, therefore it would show some real world experience.

The exam itself was 42 questions, which took me approx 50mins to do, I spent another 20 mins or so reviewing my questions, then I finished and I had pass, this wasn’t my first attempt, I tried last year and failed, the pass mark was the same then as it was on Friday, 700. Last year I scored 670 and on Friday I scored 752, both times I didn’t revise, so I’m quite happy with that.

This now means that my company (Total ICT Limited) is now a Microsoft Small Business Specialist, which proves to Small Businesses that we are selling to that we do know what we are doing. This was another major reason for taking the exam; I didn’t to enhance my companies reputation and credibility.

Lastly, sorry for not posting very often, I will try and get this nailed down.

I was trying to figure out how to get a T-SQL to allow a user to enter part of a name to query on, for example the user could enter ML, click a search button which would return all companies with the letters ML in.

I Googled this and looked on MSDN, to no avail, I knew I had achieve the desired result using access a while back, but I was pretty sure I didn’t have a company so I could check the syntax, then I recalled where a may have a copy which I did, I cracked it open and found the following:

SELECT IngramPriceList.*
FROM IngramPriceList
WHERE IMPartNumber Like ‘*’+[?]+’*’ Or ManufacturersPartNumber Like ‘*’+[?]+’*’ Or VendorName Like ‘*’+[?]+’*';

After entering this syntax into Visual Studio 2005 Express, thinking it work it didn’t, so after reading the required syntax for LIKE in the SQL Express 2005, I came up with this working solution.

SELECT CustomerID, LoginName, [Company Name], StreetAddress, townName, countyName, postcode, ContractType, StartDate, FinishDate, Notes, Active

FROM Customers
WHERE([Company Name] LIKE ‘%’ + @SearchText + ‘%’)

Were as Access uses ‘*’ SQL Server uses ‘%’ instead…. Problem fixed. ?
